Why Japan pauses for Obon
Obon (お盆) is one of the few weeks each year when much of Japan slows down at the same time. It is a Buddhist tradition in which families welcome home the spirits of their ancestors — many people travel back to their hometowns to visit family graves, clean the household altar, and spend time with relatives. Because so many people are on the move at once, it has become customary for many Japanese companies, workshops, and small businesses — ours included — to close for a few days during this period, much like the collective closures seen around New Year.
