The Kiyomizu-yaki Pottery Village(Kiyomizuyaki-no-sato) Festival was held over three days from Friday, October 18th, to Sunday, October 20th, at the Kiyomizu-yaki complex in Yamashina Ward, Kyoto City.
The Kiyomizu-yaki complex in Yamashina is known as an industrial park where artisans gather to make Kiyomizu-yaki, a traditional Kyoto pottery.
The area was originally the production base for Kiyomizu-yaki pottery in the Kiyomizu district (Higashiyama) of central Kyoto, but in the 1960s it was relocated to the current Yamashina ward due to the effects of urbanization after World War II and the need for large areas of land suitable for pottery production.
Today, the Kiyomizu-yaki complex in Yamashina is still home to artisans who continue to preserve traditional techniques while also creating works that incorporate modern designs and techniques.
A wide variety of pottery is produced at this complex, ranging from traditional tea utensils and dishes to designs that suit modern lifestyles. Some of the workshops also offer tours and pottery-making experiences, making it a popular spot for tourists and pottery fans.
The Kiyomizu-yaki Pottery Village Festival is held every October at the Kiyomizu-yaki complex in Yamashina.
This is one of the biggest pottery fairs in Kyoto, and this year 114 exhibitors have gathered, including young and experienced potters, kiln manufacturers, and wholesalers, so you can enjoy the wide variety of “the present of Kiyomizu-yaki” from one of a kind works to everyday tableware.
As each exhibitor sets up a tent in a market-style format, visitors can enjoy talking with the exhibitors, and pottery fans from all over the country gather in search of limited edition items and bargains.
Next year’s event is scheduled to be held on Friday, October 17th, Saturday, October 18th, and Sunday, October 19th.
Since Kyoto is in the middle of its tourist season, why not consider adding this to your travel plans if you like pottery?
